Malacañang said Friday that whatever decision the Supreme Court (SC) issues on the petitions challenging the Senate impeachment court’s voting threshold for the conviction of Vice President Sara Duterte must be followed.

The petitions for certiorari were filed before the SC on Thursday, after the Senate impeachment court on Wednesday lowered the voting requirements to acquit or convict Duterte from 16 to 14.

When asked to comment, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro maintained that the executive branch will not intervene in the impeachment proceedings.

“Unang-una po, sa petition for certiorari na isinampa sa Supreme Court hindi naman po party ang Malacañang. Ang Ehekutibo ay hindi party sa kaso (First of all, in the petition for certiorari filed with the Supreme Court, Malacañang is not a party. The Executive Branch is not a party to the case),” she said.

Castro, however, said whatever the SC’s decision may be, it will become part of the jurisprudence.

“So, sa ngayon kung anong magiging desisyon ng Supreme Court dapat tuparin, dapat igalang hindi lang sa panahon ngayon kung hindi sa mga susunod na henerasyon (for now, whatever decision the Supreme Court makes must be upheld and respected, not only in this day and age but also in future generations),” she said.

She noted that the ruling could later be abandoned or superseded by a subsequent decision that would establish new jurisprudence.

Castro also rejected allegations that the administration is interested in the outcome of the impeachment case.

She challenged those making such accusations to substantiate their claims.

“Hindi sa parte ng Pangulo o sa parte ng administrasyon magsasabi na hindi nakikialam. Dapat nila munang patunayan kung totoong nakikialam (It’s not on the part of the President or the administration that they are not interfering. They should first prove if they are really interfering),” Castro said.

“Dahil kung ito ay haka-haka lang nila, ginagawa lamang nila itong intriga, binibigyan lamang ng negatibong impresyon ang Pangulo, ang administrasyon ay hindi po ito dapat sinasagot (Because if this is just their speculation, they are just making this intrigue, only giving a negative impression of the President, the administration need not answer this).” (PNA)
